What Is k6?
When we think of performance testing, JMeter immediately comes to mind for most of us; it is the habit after years of use. We, as a team, also spent a long time trying to set up tests with those complex XML files and drag-and-drop interfaces. But to be honest, as we tried to keep up with the pace of modern software, that cumbersome structure started to wear us out. Just when we were looking for a solution, we came across k6, and our testing practices evolved into something completely new.
So, What Makes k6 Different for Us?
Without diving into too many technical details, what we loved most about k6 was that it did not lock us into graphical interfaces. We can write our tests directly in JavaScript. This means that performance testing is no longer something we think about at the end of the project, but has become a part of the code itself.
Here are a few points that stood out from our field experience:
Surprising Efficiency (Go Matters)
Most tools put heavy demands on the CPU for every virtual user, but k6 uses Go's lightweight "goroutine" structures in the background. So, we can simulate thousands of users from our own laptops without the noise of the computer's fan. This efficiency became a big plus when managing cloud costs.
Developer Comfort
Writing tests with code and pushing them to Git, doing code reviews with team members, and so on: performance testing has naturally become just another development task for us. Instead of getting lost in XML files, building logic with functions has incredibly sped up the process.
Pipeline Integration
Integrating performance tests into our CI/CD processes turned out to be much easier than we expected. Now, without taking the risk of "let's see it in production," we can see how performance is doing while the code is still fresh.
Observability
When the test finishes, we do not just look at text files. Thanks to the integration with Grafana and Prometheus, being able to observe how the system is "sweating" under load in real-time is really insightful.
